Our Love Story as told by Candace:*
Ever since the beginning of my freshman year of college, Matt stood out to
me. I remember the first time I met him, I was signing up to audition for
the tour team named “The Call” at Southeastern University that practiced
during the school year to prepare for a summer tour, leading worship around
the country at youth camps and churches. After signing up, he (a senior at
the time) stopped me before I left to introduce himself. The first thing I
noticed about him was how genuine he seemed! About a week later, I found
out that I made the band and that Matt was the leader.
From then on, the band would practice every Wednesday night for hours
until summer tour rolled around in May. Even though we didn’t have much
interaction at first during our practices, I got to see what a strong
leader he was and his heart for God was so apparent. Plus he wasn’t bad to
look at! Haha! As the year continued I developed a “crush” for most of the
year leading up to tour, but kept it quiet because on tour teams dating
wasn’t allowed between team members!
As tour rolled around, I tried to push my feelings aside to really focus
on ministering. But as I I got to know him more throughout the summer, my
respect for him continued to grow and so did my feelings. At the end of
tour, it became obvious he felt the same way towards me, and the last day
of tour, he officially asked me to go on our first date the next day, and
of course I said yes! I also found out that Matt had noticed me that year
leading up to tour as well, so after waiting an entire year to pursue each
other, we were excited to finally share how we felt.
Over 2 years later he proposed to me at a concert we were performing and
almost exactly a year later, on January 12, 2013 we were married! I am so
excited, thankful, overwhelmed and so happy to be married to my best
friend! Matt truly is my perfect match. We are so different in so many
ways, yet similar at the same time. He is the most genuine, kind, loving,
affectionate, witty, handsome, talented, supportive, and Godly man that I
know. I know that he is going to make a phenomenal husband and father one
day, and I’m so thankful that together we can share our passion for
ministry and music. He is an answer to so many prayers that I prayed since
I was a little girl, and is the only man I’ve ever loved. I adore him
completely, and know that I always will.
*The Proposal Story as told by Matt*:
It was almost exactly 2 and 1/2 years that we had been dating when my plan
had unfolded to propose to Candace. I had been thinking of the idea for
quite a while and was surprised that I kept the idea a secret for that
Here was the idea: Candace and I are both musicians, which you may have
realized through the story above, so from the very start of the
relationship she had made it clear that she wanted me to write her a song.
Me being the classic male that I am says “I can’t write you a song if you
tell me to write you a song!” And I stuck with that argument for all 2 and
1/2 years, every time she asked. Because of this I knew this would be the
perfect way to propose.
So I arranged for my friends, Letters From Patmos, to have a CD Release /
Worship Night Concert so that they could “invite” me to open for them.
That way I could have Candace sing with me for the “2” songs I told her we
were playing. As we finished the second song she was expecting for us to
be exiting the stage, but instead I had mentioned that we had one more song
to sing. She was pretty confused because she hadn’t practiced a third. I
tried to keep her guessing and didn’t want her to think that this was
necessarily me proposing just yet, so I just mentioned to the crowd that I
had written her a song and wanted to sing it to her. As my two great
friends, Josh Daugherty and Alex Aghoian, and I played the song, I could
see that her mind was racing about whether this was the moment or not.The
song ended with one last verse in which I was able to sing the question to her from the stage.
It was a great moment that we were able to share with our family, friends,
and many other random people we had not met that were at the show that
night or viewing over the live feed online. Lol. Luckily she had no clue
it was coming, even though I was able to have her parents, grandparents and
my sister travel in to see it.
After that moment we went out to the lobby and were greeted by our family
members and friends who were waiting to congratulate us. Then Candace and
I took a short limo ride over to the restaurant and closed out the night
with dessert at my parents house.
It literally was one of the best moments of our lives and we are so
excited to be able to share it with you. When we put it out on Youtube we
were expecting friends and family to be the main ones gathering the hits
but were shocked by the attention the video was getting. Over 83,000 views
later, I am still honored by any one who takes time to view our moment in
history because it means so much to both of us. It is honestly my favorite
song I have ever written due to having the most beautiful, incredible,
talented inspiration to draw from. Since the proposal, we have been been
able to release a single of this song on iTunes and have had multiple
people contact me in hopes to use the song to propose to their
girlfriends. I love our moment. I love that other people love, and I love
that others want to have us share in their moment with them through this
Thanks for taking the time to read a little about our life together. If
you would like to see the proposal video or hear the actual song on iTunes,
